Heritage Interpreter [Canada]


 

Heritage Interpreter Friends of Wesleyville Village – Port Hope, ON
$16.50 an hour 8 weeks 35 hours per week

Thursday to Monday Start June 2 or July 13, 2023

Two youth positions as Heritage Interpreter with the Friends of Wesleyville Village, Ontario to provide visitor hosting, rural and indigenous cultural heritage conservation support and educational program development for our community heritage village. Training, mentorship and supervision of these activities will develop communication, leadership, teamwork, client service, digital, research and presentation skills in the youth employees.

Work tasks and responsibilities:

· Conduct public education activities, cultural and hospitality events at rural Wesleyville Heritage Village including weekend family tours.

· Ensure all event visitors follow public safety protocols during all on-site educational programs and events.

· Consult with local indigenous representatives to develop an educational program and deliver a First Nations Culture weekend event.

· Working with local partner organizations contact rural seniors in the Wesleyville Village area to share their stories and participate in a rural history event.

· Research and organize information regarding history and land use of the Wesleyville area by indigenous peoples and settlers.

· Develop new approaches (digital and in-person) to public engagement in conserving and celebrating our heritage.

Qualifications:

· This position is a summer job for a college or university student or graduate.

· Applications from indigenous youth encouraged.

· Some evidence of self-directed work;

· Familiar with Microsoft office suite, social media and electronic management systems;

· Some knowledge of Northumberland County/Port Hope history and tourism initiatives, or the willingness to learn.

A grant has been received through the Canada Summer Jobs program from Service Canada to fund two employees for 8 weeks.
